Contaminated needle hazard

Most civilised people find it hard to believe that fellow-humans can live the way they do, but sadly it's true.  If you rent out or manage a property it can be a real shock to find the disgusting state tenants have left it in when they moved out.  Properties that have been used as squats may have the added hazard of drug misuse debris, including needles and other items that could be contaminated with HIV, Hepatitis etc.

Detritus from a lifetime

Alternatively, there are sad situations where someone has degenerated to the point where they couldn't look after their home properly and perhaps there is also the accumulated detritus from a lifetime to be cleaned up.  That may extend to the garden as well or, if the property has been empty for some time, the garden may have become a local dumping ground, adding to what has been abandoned there by the occupant.

As well as the above scenarios, we're also used to being called in where the householder has died in situ and perhaps not been found for some time.
